The Kindergarten Science Classroom: Designing learning environments towards equity and expansive participation

  • October 12, 2019
  • 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Lane Community College, 4000 E 30th Ave, Eugene, OR 97405

This workshop will focus on scientific storytelling, scientific modeling, and designing equitable learning environments in primary classrooms. Participants will walk through a kindergarten unit on playground slide collisions, interact with student work samples and learn from real classroom videos that showcase culturally sustaining discussions, Ambitious Science Teaching, and the NGSS in action. Participants will be able to think, learn, and revise their science story about playground slide collisions, conduct investigations with balls and a ramp, and create a scientific model. We will share our instructional practices and pedagogical design choices that have brought our students success and belonging in science. We will also present findings from five years of our research-practice partnership that highlight how the learning environment supported kindergarten student engagement with physics, modeling, discussions, and sense-making.

Presenters: Michelle Salgado & Kaia Tomokiyo

3 PDUs will be provided upon completion of this workshop.
