Travel the Columbia Gorge to observe and visit many wonderful geologic phenomena. Transportation via school bus; lunch will be in Cascade Locks and will be on your own.

Creating Experiences, Not Lesson Plans Learn how to transform lessons and labs into authentic experiences for learners of all ages that incorporate field work, the outdoors, and place/land-based educational strategies. This course will lead participants through a planning process for converting lesson plans and labs into meaningful experiences that include fieldwork, outdoor, and place/land-based educational strategies.

Gresham-East Multnomah County Tech Tour Tour key tech sites in the Gresham-East Multnomah County area. This trip is anchored on a visit to the city of Gresham's Waste Water Treatment Plant. This facility treats 13 million gallons of water daily and serves 114,000 customers. It has been energy net 0 since 2015 and now produces more electricity than it uses. This facility also collects fats, oils and grease from local establishments and generates biogas that is converted to heat and electricity. Additional stops will include the Microchip Technology Fab 4, which employs over 700 employees, is open 24/7/365, and produces microprocessors for automotive, industrial, communications, consumer, and other uses. If time, we may add an additional stop. Transportation is included in this tour.

Envisioning Schoolyard Habitats through Maps and Mini Gardens Using the National Wildlife Federation's Schoolyard Habitat Planning Guide as a framework, participants will conduct a site inventory and map school grounds to assess current conditions and potential habitat; envision their dream Schoolyard Habitat through a collaborative fairy garden activity; and craft their own mini habitat as a takeaway.

Student Centered Inquiry for All Ages: From Outdoor Education to the Classroom “I notice, I wonder, It reminds me of...” Engage in outdoor learning at Oxbow Park, exploring the simple, elegant, student centered BEETLES Project inquiry approach that is increasingly utilized in Oregon Outdoor Schools. Often leading to deep dialogue and discovery, BEETLES is also very effective in the classroom!

Explore how physical models foster an understanding of how the structure of DNA and RNA determine the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life. 

Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. 

Explain the purpose and process of replication, transcription, and translation using models of DNA and RNA. 
Examine patterns within and between side chains of amino acids.
Model protein secondary and tertiary structure based on the primary structure of amino acid sequence."

Location: Vernier Science Education and iFLY  (transportation will be on your own; this is designed so teachers can participate in both tours and make it back to Gresham HS for the Science Circus and Demo Show. Individuals may attend some or all of these events.

Vernier/iFLY

Tour the Vernier Science Education headquarters with co-founder David Vernier and members of the Vernier Science Education Team. Vernier has been on the forefront of using technology to help students engage in inquiry, using probes and software to collect and analyze data, to better investigate and understand phenomena, and/or to make engineering design decisions. The tour will include seeing new uses of technology including the 3D sandbox, to trips down memory lane in Dave's museum showing how probes and computer components have evolved over time. You can also ride the Vernier slide.

After the tour of Vernier, drive ~ 20 min to check out iFLY, the indoor skydiving event space. Details to come, but arrangements are in process. You will get a chance to see iFLY in action as well as curriculum resources that they provide. You will have a chance to skydive for an additional fee. More details to come.
