Engineering design plays a prominent role in the NGSS as seen in the engineering standards themselves to the discipline specific standards that indicate students should “design a solution.”
This session aims to utilize knowledge of thermodynamics to build a product that uses chemical energy to produce a temperature change-a hot or cold pack. During this hands on workshop, participants will engage in how to utilize the practice of inquiry to collect data that will then inform their design of a hot/cold pack. The first stage involves testing a variety of chemicals to determine experimental heat of solutions or reactions. This is followed by designing a hot/cold pack with the criteria and constraints in mind. Finally, participants will build out their prototype and test it to see if it meets the criteria.
