Empowering Teachers, Engaging Students: STEM Education for a Better World
Presented by: Mihir Ravel and Cary Sneider, Portland State University
STEM education is a powerful tool for engaging our students with meaningful experiences and motivation for making our world a much better place. This session emphasizes the role of teachers as pivotal change agents in shaping a better world by nurturing curious and capable minds in science and engineering. An enabling tool for our discussion is the EASEL model. “Engaging and Authentic Science and Engineering Learning” is a real-world approach that integrates purposeful play, exploration, and design. Grounded in the principles of PBL (Project-Based Learning) and the 5E's, EASEL provides a framework for revising favorite STEM activities to be more inclusive and impactful. We will share examples across the sciences to give attendees insights into how to create diverse, engaging, and meaningful STEM learning in which every student can grow their agency for making a better world.
