     Join us at Wildlife Safari as we explore hands-on activities for elementary students that are all about birds! Explore concepts of adaptations and anatomy. Observe behavior (you will have a chance to meet the resident birds). Practice identification. Get students excited about learning through movement and role-playing activities! 

    As part of the workshop we will have the opportunity to visit Wildlife Safari’s wetlands to observe birds in their habitat. 

    All workshop participants will receive a complimentary copy of Project WILD’s Flying Wild guide and a pass to Wildlife Safari.

    This workshop is co-hosted by Wildlife Safari

     Join us at the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy’s Rogue River Preserve to experience and explore nature journaling, a flexible, engaging, and adaptable teaching tool that helps students develop both scientific (NGSS) and social-emotional competencies. Along the trail, we will stop to practice close observation, inquiry, and connection-building using a series of nature journaling prompts. We will also practice giving feedback on journal entries to promote a growth mindset, model outdoor facilitation strategies, and discuss how to incorporate nature journaling in any learning context.

    Dress for a 1.5-mile walk along a rustic but mostly-level loop trail. Bring a notebook and a pencil, water, bag lunch, and a camping chair (if you have one). Note that the site does not have any trash cans -- be prepared to pack out what you pack in. The site has no running water but does have a portapotty. 

    This workshop is co-hosted by: Southern Oregon Land Conservancy, Bureau of Land Management Medford District, North Mountain Park Nature Center

    Are you an afterschool/out-of-school instructor, leader or site manager working with students in grades 3-8 either virtually or in-person, or are planning to do so?
    Funded by an Oregon Department of Education (ODE) grant, STEM Beyond School (SBS) aims to increase community and culturally based STEM learning experiences for youth by supporting educators through sharing and joint learning.
    SBS is accepting applications to join our statewide networked learning community of out-of-school/after-school educators to flexibly participate in 50 hours of virtual professional development from Oct. 2021-June 2022.  Apply now to be considered for a $2500 stipend.  Applications are due OCTOBER 22nd. Stipends are for afterschool/out of school instructors, leaders or site managers working with students of color, English Language Learners, students experiencing poverty, and/or students with disabilities.     TRIBAL HISTORY/SHARED HISTORY: OREGON AMERICAN INDIAN CURRICULUM, October 20th, 2021 9:00 - 11:00 AM

    • Scheduled Guest Speakers from the Confluence Project: 
      • Heather Gurko (Tlingit Nation), Education manager
      • Courtney Yilk, Program manager
    • In 2017, the Oregon Legislature enacted Senate Bill (SB) 13, now known as Tribal History/Shared History. Tribal History/Shared History is (K-12) historically accurate, culturally embedded, place-based, contemporary, and developmentally appropriate Native American/Alaska Native curriculum. Throughout this workshop, participants will learn the nine Essential Understandings and six Critical Orientations needed to understand the rich culture and contributions of Native people in this state and nation. Participants will leave the workshop with ways to implement and integrate these essential understandings and educate students on the accurate and authentic traditional knowledge and place of tribal peoples that call Oregon home.

    Description: In this interactive workshop, teachers will learn about the life cycle and biology of salmon while exploring critical habitat along the Clackamas River. The training also includes a focus on engaging youth in meaningful stewardship projects designed to improve watershed health. Lessons will connect with salmon or trout rearing activities in classroom aquariums. Participants should pack a lunch. Activities take place mostly outdoors so dress for the weather, including footwear for walking in water.  Participants will receive a copy of Project WILD’s Aquatic WILD.  This workshop is co-hosted by National Wildlife Federation

    2021-22 Elementary STEAM Leaders

    Apply to participate here.

    Intended Impact: Increasing the time spent on quality STEAM learning in Elementary classrooms.

    → Priority given to teachers from schools serving students navigating poverty, students who are Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and/or rural students. Priority also given to teachers who identify as persons of color.

    Goals:

    Strengthen science and STEAM instruction by building on and integrating with existing curriculum.

    Empower teachers to spend more time on science by building their confidence with NGSS, effective instructional practice and a repertoire of quality lessons.

    Develop a cadre of elementary STEAM leaders.

    Engage administrators in science & STEAM leadership.

    Commitment from teacher cohort:

    Cohort 2 - New Cohort

    Cohort 1 - 2nd Year Cohort (Returning Leaders)

    Virtual Fall Institute

    6 hr on Sat, 10/2/21 + 2-hr after-school session on 10/7/21, 10/14/21, & 10/21/21

    Complete and implement at least 2 high-quality STEAM lessons, complementing/augmenting current curriculum. (Some leaders may choose to work in a group and make more lessons together).

    Virtual Fall Institute

    As needed, continue perfecting lessons from previous year

    Create at least two new lessons

    Both Cohorts

    Attend ¾ of after school sessions differentiated by cohort

    Three Sessions (12/2/21, 2/3/22, 3/31/22) - 2 hr each after school

    Wrap up (5/5/2022) - 2 hr after school

    → Hopefully 1-2 of these will be in person (regionally, spring most likely) and the rest virtual. We will communicate those dates well in advance.

    Complete pre and post surveys

    Share learning in some way with their school’s staff or district grade level team

    STEAM Leader Compensation:

    $1200 stipend, distributed in a few payments by local STEM Hub

    $150 for supplies supporting teachers’ lessons
